Kulgam, Dec 26: In a pride moment for south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, Rehaan Showkat (14), son of Showkat Ahmad Reshi of Ganjipora, Kulgam, clinched the gold medal at the 7th Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory Karate Championship, delivering an outstanding performance at the UT-level event held in Jammu. With this victory, Rehaan been selected for the National Level Karate Championship.
Speaking to the media, Rehaan said he has been receiving professional training for the past one and half month at the Khelo India Centre, Khudwani Qaimoh established by the Govt, under the guidance of his coach Tajamul Ahmad Khan. He credited his success to consistent hard work, discipline, and the unwavering support of his parents.
“I worked hard despite ups and downs and never gave up. That determination helped me win the gold medal at the UT level. Sports keep us mentally and physically fit, and youths must stay away from drugs to achieve something meaningful in life,” Rehaan said.
He said this is the first time that Khelo India Centre in Khudwani is providing free karate training along with kits and uniforms to youths.
Praising his mentor, he said, “I have never seen such a dedicated and inspiring coach like Tajamul Khan. He truly nurtures talent and prepares us for bigger stages,” he added, while urging the government to extend stronger support to talented players so they can represent India at the international level.
Coach, Tajamul Khan said, “We are providing free karate training to youth, along with complete kits and uniforms. For the first time, three players from our Khelo India Centre have been selected for national-level championships,” he said.
He encouraged youths to come forward and join the khelo india centre, assuring them of quality training aimed at producing international-level athletes.
“We conduct training sessions throughout the day. Those who are busy with their studies can join us after 3 pm. Our aim is to groom champions who can shine at the international level,” he said.
