7 drug peddlers arrested in Kashmir: Police

Srinagar, Aug 18: Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday said to have arrested seven drug peddlers in Sopore, Kulgam, Budgam & Baramulla and recovered contraband, psychotropic substances from their possession.

In Sopore, a police party at a checkpoint established at Hib Dangerpora intercepted & apprehended a notorious drug peddler identified as Fayaz Ahmad Wani son of Muhammad Abdullah Wani resident of Tujjar Shareef Sopore, a police spokesman said in a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

During checking, 12 bottles of Codeine phosphate were recovered from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to a police station where he remains in custody, police said.

In Kulgam, a police party of Police Station Qazigund at a checkpoint established at Drien Daulatabad near NHW intercepted & apprehended a notorious drug peddler identified as Suhail Ahmad Ganie son of Bashir Ahmad Ganie resident of Brankher Drien, Daulatabad, police said, adding that during search, 5Kgs of poppy straw like contraband substance from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to a police station where he remains in custody.

In Budgam, a police party of Police station Magam arrested 04 drug peddlers identified as Zahid Majeed Bhat son of Abdul Majeed Bhat, Irfan Ahmad War son of Abdul Ahad War both residents of Peth-Kanihama, Tariq Ahmad Parray son of Ghulam Mohammad Parray resident of Warihama and Fayaz Ahmad Dar son of Abdul Rahman Dar resident of Badran Magam, police said.

During search, 40 bottles of codeine phosphate and cash amount of Rs 13100 was recovered from their possession, police said, adding that they have been arrested and shifted to police station where they remain in custody.

More recoveries and arrests are expected in the said case, police said.

In Baramulla, a police party under the supervision of SDPO Pattan Mohd Nawaz, assisted by Incharge PP Palhallan arrested a drug smuggler namely Abdul Hameed Mir son of Ghulam Hassan Mir resident of Seru Gudwani Pattan during checkpoint at TCP Palpora Crossing Pattan, police said.

During the search, 2.750 Kgs of Poppy Straw like contraband substance concealed in a bag was recovered from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to a police station where he remains in custody, police added.

Accordingly, police said that cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations and further investigation has been initiated.

“Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighbourhood. Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” police said—(KNO)
