Crammed classrooms in Tangmarg village: MP Er Rashid slams govt, challenges HM’s laptop remarks

Vows to intervene personally if situation isn’t addressed within month

Gulmarg, Oct 19: Member Parliament (MP) for Baramulla, Er Rashid on Saturday raised serious concerns over the poor condition of education facilities in Qazipora village of Tangmarg, as six classes have been crammed into a single room for several years.

He criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remark of offering laptops to Kashmiri youth “instead of stones”. “Let Amit Shah visit Qazipora and witness the condition of students firsthand,” he said.

The Government Primary School in Qazipora, Tangmarg has been operating under dire conditions, with five classes crammed into a single room to accommodate 49 enrolled students.

Following a comprehensive tour to Gulmarg, MP Rashid, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), raised questions over the credibility of the Home Minister, Lieutenant Governor and local authorities, saying despite the presence of senior officials like the Director of Education, the school operates with only one room accommodating 50 students.

“This highlights both the incompetence of the education department and the high-handedness of the forest department, which has obstructed the construction of a new school building,” the MP said.

The AIP chief also slammed the “double standards” of the administration. “If permission for a school is denied, how are luxury hotels and liquor shops being licensed in Gulmarg? I’m not against hotels, but why should poor children be denied basic education?” he questioned.

He warned that if the administration fails to resolve the issue within one month as promised, he would take matters into his own hands. “I will personally construct the school building, and no one will dare to stop me,” Rashid asserted—(KNO)
