Kulgam, Mar 30: A sudden hailstorm lashed parts of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, including Waltangoo and adjoining villages in Kund area as well as DH Pora, this afternoon, causing damage to apple blossoms and standing crops.
Reports said the hailstorm, though brief, was intense, affecting orchards and agricultural fields in several areas. Growers said the impact was significant as it struck at a crucial stage when apple trees are in full bloom.
“Blossoms have been hit in many orchards. This is a sensitive stage for fruit setting and the damage may affect overall yield,” said an orchardist.
Experts said the blossom stage is vital for fruit development and any damage during this period can lead to reduced production and quality of the apple crop.
Besides apple orchards, seasonal vegetables and other crops in nearby fields were also reported to have suffered losses.
Locals expressed concern over potential damage, saying the exact extent of losses would be known in the coming days.
Meanwhile, farmers have urged the Horticulture Department and district administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the affected areas, and provide necessary assistance to the growers.
