Kulgam, March 15: Acting tough against drug trafficking, the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kulgam arrested three alleged drug peddlers, including two residents of Amritsar, in two separate operations and recovered a sizeable quantity of contraband substances from their possession.

A senior police officer said that during routine naka checking at Khudwani on the National Highway, two persons attempted to evade the police party. Sensing suspicious movement, the naka team chased and apprehended them.

“During the search, 1.2 kilograms of charas was recovered from the possession of Ranjeet Singh, son of Dilbeer Singh, a resident of Maratal Wandi, Amritsar. Additionally, 0.86 grams of brown sugar and 57 grams of charas were recovered from Jobin, son of Major Singh, a resident of Meno Wali, Amritsar”, he said.

“Following the recovery, police registered FIR No. 24/2026 under sections 8/20/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Qaimoh and both the accused were taken into custody for further investigation”, he added.

“In another operation, police teams laid a naka at Khrewan–Lassipora where a person moving suspiciously attempted to flee after noticing the police party. The alert naka team, however, managed to apprehend him tactfully”, he added.

“Upon search, police recovered 205 grams of charas-like substance in powdered form from his possession. The accused was identified as Idrees Ahmad Ganai, son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganai, a resident of Furrah”, he said.

A case under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Qazigund and investigation has been set into motion.

Police reiterated their commitment to curb the drug menace and appealed to the public, particularly parents and youth, to cooperate with authorities by sharing any information regarding drug peddling or substance abuse, assuring that the identity of informants will remain confidential.
