Locals say project will cater to the needs of almost 5000 households after getting completed; 80 per cent work of the project has been completed, the remaining work will take two months, it shall be completed by June: AEE Jal Shakti

Kulgam, April 16: The residents of several villages of Devsar belt in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district here have alleged that the Jal Shakti department (PHE) is supplying impure water to them, claiming that the authorities are putting their lives at risk.

According to locals, a water filtration plant, established at Chambgund, Kulgam, is yet to be completed despite several years passing, “the project was sanctioned in 2010, after which the work was started and funds allocated. More than a decade has passed but the work is still incomplete”, they said.

According to them, the project after getting completed will cater to the needs of almost 5000 households in many villages who are using contaminated water from streams and also paying fees for that.

The locals have appealed to the higher authorities to intervene and mitigate their problem.

When Contacted Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Jal Shakti department Qazigund, Mohd Rafiq told VOI that 80 per cent work of the project has been completed, adding that project had been languishing, leading to slow progress, “We have also issued a notice to the contractor for speedy work on the project, the remaining work would take two months; it shall be completed by June this year,” he added.
