Kulgam, Feb 15: The residents of Nillow area in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district are facing immense hardships due to unscheduled power cuts, they complained here on Thursday.

The residents said that for the one month the power scenario has worsened as the department has resorted to unscheduled and frequent power cuts.

Power outages occur ten times a day in our areas for the last one month especially during peak hours in evening which has added to people’s worries,” locals said.

“We live under darkness. The severe lack of electricity supply has affected students in the area as they are forced to study under candlelight,” Mohd Shafi, a local said.

The students said that they couldn’t prepare for exams because of power cuts. “We can’t study properly as electricity plays hide and seek,” said, a student.

PDD has failed to provide the electricity as per the announced schedule in our area. Although we have informed the management many times but to no avail,” Hilal Ahmad, another local said.

Meanwhile, the locals requested the higher ups to look into the matter and solve their genuine demands at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.

On contacting, Superintending Engineer (SE), KPDCL South Circle, Muzaffar Ahmad Lone, said “Frequent cuts occur due to  extreme load shedding people are using crude heating gadgets during winters which are causing power cuts,” adding “If people will use the supply as advised by the department there will be no power outages.”

The officer further said the department is taking all measures to provide electricity as per the schedule.

“Teams are on the ground who are checking the illegal use of power supply in various areas” he said
