Qazigund (Kulgam), Dec 21: The Pulse Polio Immunisation drive was successfully conducted at Qazigund, where Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Kulgam, Bilal Ahmad Kamgar, administered Pulse Polio drops to children in the presence of Medical Superintendent, Emergency Hospital Qazigund, Dr. Shagufta Salam.
Speaking to the reporters, ACD Kamgar said, “As you know, polio is a dangerous disease that can cause lifelong disability. Across the world, people affected by polio suffer permanent paralysis. Keeping this in view, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated a global programme to provide free polio vaccination to children below five years of age. This initiative has been ongoing for many years and polio is now in its final stage of eradication.”
He further said that the nationwide Pulse Polio programme will continue for three days, with today being the first day in Kulgam.
“Pulse-Polio vaccine is available at all Primary Health Centres (PHC’s), hospitals, and other important public places where people pass by. From tomorrow, health teams will conduct door-to-door visits to ensure that no child below five years of age is left unvaccinated, so that this disease can be completely wiped out,” he added.
“Administration is fully committed to achieving 100 percent coverage and ensuring complete eradication of polio”, he added.
He urged parents to cooperate and ensure every eligible child receives the life-saving polio drops.
