Kulgam, July 16: In a significant crackdown on illegal mineral extraction, the Geology and Mining Department of Kulgam district has seized eight vehicles, during a raid conducted last night, official said on Wednesday.

An official told that a joint raid and checkpoint operation was conducted in collaboration with Qaimoh Police Station during the night of July 15th July, Eight vehicles, consisting of dumpers and tippers, were intercepted and impounded at Qaimoh Police Station, pending further legal action.

“FIR has been lodged under relevant statutes. This swift action demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal mineral transport within the district”, he said.

Dr. Khurshid Ahmad Dar, District Mineral Officer, affirmed the commitment of the Department of Geology and Mining, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Kulgam Police force to eradicate illegal mineral extraction and transportation.

Their focus includes addressing the issue at its source. This joint operation exemplifies the interagency collaboration to enforce regulations and safeguard natural resources. The impounded dumpers and tippers, commonly used for transporting construction materials, indicate the scale of the disrupted illegal operation. These vehicles are being held as evidence. The filed FIR signifies the commencement of formal legal proceedings against those involved.

Authorities are meticulously documenting the type, quantity, and estimated market value of the seized minerals to assess the environmental and economic impact of the illegal operation. Investigators are tracing the minerals’ origin and identifying the individuals and networks involved in their illegal extraction and transport. This comprehensive approach aims to dismantle the entire illegal operation and hold all responsible parties accountable. The Department of Geology and Mining is reviewing existing regulations and enforcement procedures to identify weaknesses and implement strengthening measures, including enhanced surveillance, improved intelligence gathering, and increased joint operations with law enforcement. The long-term objective is to establish a robust regulatory framework that effectively deters illegal mining and protects the region’s valuable mineral resources.
