We are poor this is injustice to us as we poor people can’t afford enormous bills; Locals: People have myths about smart meters and the meters won’t generate hefty bills: AEE KPDCL: Will look into the matter, says DC Kulgam
Kulgam, April 24: The Residents of Ashmuji area of South Kashmiri’s Kulgam district staged a massive protest against the installation of smart meters on Thursday.
A large number of men and women hit roads and expressed resentment against the government’s move to install smart meters which according to protesters is cruelty being meted out to poor masses.
“We are poor families here and the majority of our men are daily wagers. We are earning hand to mouth and can’t afford enormous bills,” a women protester said.
“We already have meters installed in our homes and we are paying regular bills. What is the fun of installing new meters?” She asked. “This is injustice to us as we poor people can’t afford such huge bills.”
The protesters threatened to intensify their protests on a daily basis if the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) doesn’t shelve the idea of the installation of smart meters.
Responding to the demonstrators, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) KPDCL Kulgam, Shabir Ahmad told that there is a misconception among people that smart meters are expensive, adding that Smart meters are much more beneficial than current meters.
“We came here to make people understand but no one is ready to understand. Smart Meter will only give new facilities and power supply will also be better. It is unfortunate that in some areas people are resisting this progress”, he said
When Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Athar Amir Khan told that he will look into the matter.
