Kulgam/Anantnag, Dec 9: In a significant environmental push, over three lakh saplings will be planted in Anantnag and Kulgam social forestry division, official said on Tuesday.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Social Forestry, Gazalla Abdullah said “they have set a target of 3 lakh saplings to be planted in Anantnag and Kulgam aimed at boosting green cover and restoring vulnerable forest areas”.
“40,000 saplings have already been planted under the ongoing autumn plantation drive, and will continue until mid-December, and will resume in late February, ensuring the full target is achieved”, she said.
“We are witnessing an unprecedented increase in forest fires. Unfortunately, in Anantnag division a forest guard lost his life while attempting to douse the flames, adding people should act with utmost responsibility to stand with the department in safeguarding forests from preventable disasters”. She said, when asked about the surge in forest fires.
She urged people to strictly refrain from lighting fires within forest boundaries, throwing partially burnt cigarette pieces, or engaging in any fire-related activity that may cause a fire outbreak.
