Srinagar, Sep 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday expressed concern over the continued closure of several tourist destinations in Kashmir, saying such restrictions defeat the purpose of tourism promotion.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function, CM Omar said, “On one side we talk about showcasing Kashmir, but at the same time, important destinations remain shut. How can we invite tourists by telling them to enjoy the Gondola ride while ATV tracks are closed, or that they may visit Tangmarg but not Drung, and Pahalgam but not Aru or Betab Valley?” he questioned.
“What happened in Pahalgam should not have happened. Though corrective steps were later taken, the destinations should have been reopened. The tourism sector has suffered losses, and the government is duty-bound to support the affected stakeholders,” he said.
Omar noted that even during the most difficult times, such places were not kept closed, assuring that he would raise the issue with the Union Home Minister. “So I assure you I will speak to the Home Minister and request him to open these destinations. This will build confidence and help us attract more tourists,” he added.
The Chief Minister further stressed that informing tourists about closed destinations creates a wrong impression of the Valley. “Unless we coordinate with the Central Government, promotion efforts will remain ineffective,” CM Omar said. (KNC)
