Devsar (Kulgam) Oct 8: In a devastating incident, a massive fire reduced a family’s house and possessions to ashes at Cheyan village of Devsar tehsil in Kulgam district on Wednesday, destroying valuables worth lakhs and shattering preparations for a daughter’s upcoming wedding.

Local sources said fire broke out in the house of one Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of Cheyan. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the dwelling along with the kitchen, gutting gold jewellery and others items set aside for the wedding, household furniture, and other valuables.

Shah, whose son is a labour by profession, had planned to marry off his one daughter among four. But the fire left the family devastated as everything they had saved for the occasion was reduced to ashes in no time.

“We were coming out of the masjid when we heard shouts about a fire nearby. Within minutes, the flames had engulfed the house and reduced it to ashes in no time”, a local resident told.

“He had kept jewellery and others items including cash at home for daughter’s marriage. His all belongings reduced to ashes in the fire mishap,” said one of the relative of Shah.

“All his savings reduced to ashes in the fire mishap. I urge the administration to provide him some necessary help,” another local said.
