Qazigund (Kulgam) Nov 17: A dry-fruit seller from Wanpora, Qazigund, succumbed to grievous burn injuries days after he set himself ablaze when police reportedly refused to allow him to meet his detained son and brother in connection with the Delhi car blast case, Alleged family said on Monday.
Wani allegedly attempted self-immolation outside his home after his son, Jasir Bilal Wani, and his brother, Naveel Ahmad Wani, were detained for questioning by Jammu and Kashmir Police as part of the expanding terror module investigation. Family members say Wani had repeatedly pleaded with authorities for a brief meeting—but was denied.
Speaking to reporters, Naseema Akhtar, Wani’s sister-in-law, said the family had no involvement in any terror-related activity and accused the authorities of “unjustified detention” of her relatives.
“He felt humiliated and broken after Jasir was arrested. My husband, Naveel—a Physics lecturer—was also picked up from his duty station. We are respectable people. He couldn’t bear it and set himself on fire. He suffered 100 percent burns,” she said while appealing to the administration to release the detained family members.
Wani was first shifted to GMC Anantnag and later referred to SMHS Hospital Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries, officials confirmed.
The family’s house is adjacent to that of Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr Muzaffar Rather, the two brothers at the centre of the interstate terror probe. While Dr Adeel was arrested from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, by J&K Police, his elder brother Dr Muzaffar is currently believed to be on the run.
